Sandy Oesterling, 80, of East Tawas

Sandra “Sandy” A. Oesterling, of East Tawas, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City, age 80 years.

Sandy was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 31st, 1943 to the late Anthony Joseph and Jane Louise (Piscopink) Licari. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Wayne, Michigan.  Sandy married her husband and best friend, Robert “Bob” Oesterling, on April 10, 1965 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne.  Sandy and Bob were married nearly 55 years until Bob’s passing in 2020.

Sandy was very devout in her Christian faith.  She enjoyed watching movies, reading good books, bike riding, doing arts & crafts, and needle point. She was an animal lover and truly kind to everyone she met.  Sandy was really active in the Tawas community.  She was a former President, and currently serving as the Vice President, of the Iosco County Historical Society; devoted advocate for the Iosco County Museum, and various other pursuits.  During her working career, Sandy worked both as a bank teller at a local bank in East Tawas, and also a teacher’s aide at Tawas Area Schools.  Her beautiful smile and warm loving heart will truly be missed by everyone who knew her.

Sandy is survived by her three children, Shelly Lynn Bird of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Earl Anthony Oesterling of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Charlene Oesterling of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; nephew, Jamie Gasior; 2 brothers in law, Howard (Betty) Oesterling of Clinton, Michigan, and Gene Richard (Bernadette) of Traverse City; 1 sister in law, Rebecca (James) Kerns of Trenton, Michigan; and so many dear friends.  Sandy is preceded in death by her parents Anthony Joseph and Jane Louise Licari; sister, Cheryl Gasior; and her beloved husband, Robert “Bob” Oesterling. 

Per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass for Sandy is scheduled for Thursday, June 27th, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in East Tawas.  Her family will welcome friends for a time of gathering at the church on Thursday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of mass.  Concluding mass, there will be a fellowship meal at the church social hall with a burial of her urn following the meal at 2:30 PM at Greenwood Cemetery in East Tawas.
