Heat exhaustion is real!

Oscoda County Senior News

OSCODA COUNTY- Welcome July! Please note, the Senior Center will be closed July 1 – 5 to have some well work done. Provided there are no extra issues, we will be back on July 8.

We sure had some warm days start happening in mid-June. Reminder that the senior center is also a cooling center. If you do not have air conditioning or a way to cool down during extreme heat days, please remember you can come to the center and get some relief. The couch area is very comfy and there are books to read, puzzles to do, or computers to play on while you are here. We also have internet so you can bring your own tablet or iPad to use.

Make sure you stay hydrated, so drink water throughout the day. Do not stay out in the hot sun too long. Heat exhaustion or heat stroke can take you by surprise if you are not careful. Some signs of heat exhaustion are feeling weak or faint, having a weak but fast pulse or heart rate, sweating heavily, or feeling nauseous. If you are having any of these symptoms, find some shade or go inside to air conditioning, or even sit in front of a fan. Remove a layer of clothing if you can, drink some water, anything you can do to help your body cool down. If you feel your body temperature is elevated, you have a rapid strong pulse or heart rate, feel foggy, begin to vomit, or have hot red skin, these could be signs of heat stroke. You should get medical help immediately. Just pay attention to how much time you are spending in the sun, and how you are feeling to avoid any issues.

The food drops happening this month are the Golden Grocery Giveaway Program (senior cheese box) will be on Tues., July 23 from 10 – 11 a.m. The Together We Can Food Pantry will be on Thur., July 25 from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30. They ask that you bring ID to show you live in the county and a banana box if you have one. If they run out of food, they will be gone before 2:30. Both food boxes happen at the fairgrounds.

The Council’s Board meeting will be on Mon., July 15 at 1 p.m. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

July’s full moon, also called the Buck Moon, will be beautifully shining on July 21.  Hope you get to see it! There is always at least one thing to be grateful for daily. Have a wonderful month and keep smiling! Pass on the smiles to brighten someone else’s day too. Please be kind, it is such an easy thing to do! The world sure needs more smiles, positivity, and kindness. A small kind gesture goes along way. We are not alone; everyone is struggling with something.
