It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Martha Frances Michaud, age 96, of Roscommon, Michigan. Martha died on August 22, 2020, at Northern Pines Assisted Living in Grayling, Michigan, in comfort, with family by her side.  Martha was a woman of strong faith, who deeply loved God, and we are comforted in the knowledge that she is with Him now, at peace and surrounded by His love.

Martha was born March 5, 1924, in Hinsdale, Illinois, one of eight children. Shortly after her birth, her parents, Charles and Anna Hinman moved their family to Roscommon, Michigan. Martha grew up in Roscommon where she graduated from Gerrish-Higgins schools in 1941.  Martha went on to graduate from Mercy College in Detroit, Michigan, with her degree in nursing. On June 25, 1960, Martha married James Michaud in Detroit.  They moved back to Roscommon in 1962 where they remained, working, and raising their family of four children.

Martha, known as Marty to many, was a lifelong resident of Roscommon.  During her professional nursing career as an RN, Martha utilized her skills and talents in factories, hospitals, camps, and clinics, but she will be remembered mostly for her private duty nursing. It is in that role that she assisted many families in the Roscommon area, providing home care and end of life care for their loved ones. Once Martha “retired” she continued to use her nursing skills doing life insurance physicals for local agencies.  Outside of nursing Martha loved to play card games, affectionately known among family and friends as the cribbage queen. When not playing games, Martha was an avid reader, loved to walk outdoors, and volunteering her time as a member of the Council of Catholic Women and Eucharistic Minister for the homebound at St. Michael's Parish. She enjoyed visiting family, especially the grandkids, and listening to music, passing on her musical talents and interests to her children.

Martha will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by Michael (Therese) of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Desiree (Brian) Gavin of Roscommon, Michigan; Greg (Rachel) of East Lansing, Michigan; and Gordon (Gretchen) of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Martha is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren with one more on the way.   Martha is also survived by  Wally (Maureen) Hinman of Bay City, Michigan, and sister-in-law Mary Ann Hinman of Chicago, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Martha is preceded in death by her husband Jim and her brothers Charles, George, and David, and sisters Ruth, Mary and Catherine.

The family would like to send a big thank you to the staff at Northern Pines Assisted Living for their gentle, kind, caring and attentive treatment during the final weeks of her life. We are also very deeply appreciative for all the Heartland Hospice did to support Martha and her family during her final days and hours.   A second thank-you goes out to the Brook of Roscommon for their care of Martha during the three years she lived there.

Family and friends will gather for a Memorial Mass at St. Michael Catholic Church in Roscommon on September 12, 2020, at 11:00 a.m.  with a luncheon following at the Gerrish Township Hall.

The family prefers memorial contributions be made in Martha’s name to Northern Pines Assisted Living of Grayling, Michigan or Heartland Hospice, 564 Progress Street, West Branch, MI 48661.
