May is Trauma Awareness Month

May is National Trauma Awareness Month. McLaren Northern Michigan urges the public to practice safety when enjoying northern Michigan activities allowed under the Stay Home Executive Order.

“During this COVID-19 pandemic we need to do things that are beneficial for our mental health. We want the public to do the activities that they love to do,” stated Michael Martin, MD, Trauma Medical Director at McLaren Northern Michigan. “The important thing is to make sure that you are following safety practices while enjoying the activities that northern Michigan has to offer.”

As a verified Level II Trauma Center, McLaren Northern Michigan sees an average of 950 traumas each year. The following tips and guidelines will help our community to stay safe:

Wear a Helmet

  • Motorcycle
  • Bicycle
  • Skateboard
  • Scooter
  • Rollerblades / Rollerskates
  • ATV
  • Dirt Bike

Water / Boating Safety

  • Never swim alone
  • Swim in a safe area with a lifeguard
  • Don’t enter cold water
  • Wear a life jacket if you can’t swim or while on a boat
  • Don’t swim or boat during a storm
  • Avoid diving into water, jump in feet first
  • Don’t drink alcohol or use recreational drugs when swimming or boating

Sun Safety

  • Remember to Slip, Slop, Slap, Wrap. Slip on a shirt, Slop on Sunscreen, Slap on a hart, and Wrap on sunglasses.
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid high sun times, check UV index
  • Seek shade

Vehicle / Driving Safety

  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Don’t drink and drive, or use recreational drugs and drive
  • Children should be in car seats based on their age and weight
  • Never drive while tired
  • Do not text or eat while driving
  • Reduce your speed while driving through a construction zone
  • Pay attention to road signs and markings

Home Safety

  • Check your fire and carbon monoxide batteries
  • Lock your doors to avoid unwanted entry
  • Avoid using a ladder or power tools while home alone
  • Lock your medications and cleaning supplies
  • Remove clutter or items that pose a fall risk
  • Have an emergency plan in the case of a fire
  • Only one person at a time on a trampoline
